In March, the weather in Northern Vietnam has passed the severe and unpredictable phase. It is usually warm and dry and the same could be talked about Central and South Vietnam, although the temperature can be higher the more Southern you go. March is said to be one of the best month to be in Ho Chi Minh City.
If you happen to be in the North of Vietnam for March, do not miss Perfume Pagoda festival. Buddhists from all over Vietnam make their pilgrimage here from early February to mid- March to pray for luck, health and happiness of themselves and their families. The trek is tedious and usually crammed with pilgrimage. However, it is the only time of the year to capture such a moment in Perfume Pagoda- people with trays of chicken, sticky rice and fruits on top of their heads while walking up the rocky stairs.
March the 8th is also an important day for many Vietnamese, and in case you forget, it is considered the International Woman’s Day. There are flower and gift services all over the cities and cultural events to celebrate the importance of women in socio-economic and historical area of Vietnam. The younger is to show respect for their mothers and grandmothers; students to teachers and men to women; nowhere can the Women Day be so alive like in Vietnam.
Elephant Racing Festival: Held in Ban Don in the third lunar month, this annual festival pits the elephants of adjacent villages in races, swimming, and games of football and tug of war. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without plenty of feasting and dancing to the boisterous sound of gongs and drums.
Phu Giay Festival: Taking place on the third to eighth day of the third month of the Vietnamese lunar calendar, the festival draws pilgrims to Phu Giay Temple (in Nam Dinh province) to pay tribute to Lieu Hanh, one of the Vietnamese "four immortal gods." It features folk singing and dance, plus other traditional diversions.
