Hanoi Beyond the Guidebook: See the Capital Like a Local

More than a meeting point of Vietnamese gastronomy, Hanoi offers travelers sense of peace, mixture of old and new Asia . To really understand Vietnam’s capital, slow down, follow the rhythm of everyday life, and look beyond the usual sightseeing list

For first-time visitors, Hanoi can feel busy and chaotic. But spend a little more time here, and another side of the city begins to appear — intimate, traditional and deeply connected to everyday Vietnamese life.

Start the day like a local

Hanoi wakes up early.

Before the streets become busy, locals gather for breakfast at small neighbourhood restaurants. There may be no fancy décor or extensive menu. Instead, you might find just one or two dishes prepared with care: phở bò, phở gà, bánh cuốn or xôi.

This is part of Hanoi's food culture — simple, local and wonderfully fresh.

Rather than searching only for famous restaurants, try following the morning crowd. Sometimes the most memorable meal is found at a small family-run place tucked away on an ordinary street.

Coffee is part of the experience

Coffee in Hanoi is not simply something to drink between activities. It is a daily ritual.

From strong Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk to the city's famous egg coffee, Hanoi has developed a coffee culture of its own.

But the experience goes beyond the drink. Find a small café, sit down, watch the streets and let the city pass by.

Discover Hanoi's traditional crafts

Hanoi's heritage is also preserved through its crafts.

Around the capital, traditional villages and old streets continue to tell stories through pottery, silk, lacquer, silver and other forms of craftsmanship.

A visit to a craft village offers something different from simply seeing an exhibition. You can meet the people behind the craft, see how objects are made and, in some places, try creating something yourself.

For travellers interested in culture, these encounters often become some of the most personal memories of Vietnam.

Take the scenic route

Hanoi is a city best explored at a slower pace.

Walk around the Old Quarter and look beyond the main streets. Wander beside Hoan Kiem Lake in the early morning. Take a cyclo through quieter neighbourhoods, or join a local guide on a food walk through streets you might otherwise pass without noticing.

The city is full of contrasts: French colonial buildings beside modern cafés, ancient temples hidden between busy streets, and traditional family businesses operating alongside contemporary boutiques.

This mixture of old and new is what makes Hanoi feel uniquely Hanoi.

Taste the city one dish at a time

Food is one of the easiest ways to connect with Hanoi.

Beyond phở, there is bánh cuốn, bún chả, chả cá, nem, xôi and countless regional dishes that appear in small eateries around the city.

The best way to experience them is not necessarily to visit the most famous restaurants. Instead, follow a local who knows where the neighbourhood eats.

A good food experience should tell you something about the city — not just fill your stomach.

Look beyond the landmarks

The Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Old Quarter are important parts of Hanoi's story. But they are only the beginning.

The real character of the city can often be found between the landmarks — in its markets, cafés, workshops, neighbourhood streets and conversations with local people.

This is why we believe travelling in Vietnam should not be about ticking places off a list.

It should be about understanding the place you are visiting.
